“Summer Slide” sounds like a fun activity, but in reality it represents the learning loss many children experience during the months when they are not in school. Research by John Hopkins University showed that children can lose a month or more in their skills as measured on academic tests in reading and math. That the decline is far worse for children from lower-income households. Summer learning loss appears to be cumulative, too, and over time can make a huge difference in achievement levels in school.

Russ Adams

Meet Russ Adams and see some of the creatures he has designed in his presentation. Russ is best known for his work on Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge. Selected from nearly a thousand applicants he became one of 10 cast members in Season 1, and appeared in 7 of 8 episodes, quickly becoming the fan favorite. Russ has done work for Hollywood and independent films and has his own creature studio, called Escape Design FX.

ComicFest Guest Jess Smart Smiley

Jess has created more than a dozen books for young readers, including the brand new activity book "Let’s Make Comics!" and the all-ages graphic novel "Upside Down: A Vampire Tale." Jess has done work for DisneyPixar, Cartoon Network, Adventure Time, and Penguin Random House, and is thrilled to visit the Treehouse Museum. Jess will talk about his books and even draw for the audience, and then autograph copies of his books. Treehouse has copies of some of his titles for sale at the Welcome Desk.
